Reading results accurately
- Compare to card in daylight — artificial light shifts colours
- Wait full time — shaking nitrate bottle #2 for 30 seconds matters
- Rinse vials in tank water — tap water contaminates samples
- Expired kits lie — replace bottles older than 3 years or after heavy use

Frequently asked questions
How often should I test?
Weekly for an established tank, and daily during cycling or after any problem. The value is in the trend rather than the individual reading — a nitrate of 20 ppm means something quite different if last week was 5 than if it was 40.
Are test strips accurate enough?
They are fine for a quick check on whether something has moved, and genuinely poor for the readings that matter most. Ammonia and nitrite need liquid tests, since a strip cannot reliably distinguish zero from the low-but-lethal readings that kill fish.
Why do my readings differ from the shop test?
Usually reagent age or technique rather than either result being wrong. Kits expire — check the date on the bottle — and nitrate tests in particular need the second reagent shaken hard for the full time stated, or they read low. Test the same sample twice before believing a surprising result.
