Green Coral Goby

The Green Coral Goby (Gobiodon histrio), also known as the Broad-barred Coral Goby, is a tiny gem of the reef. It features a stunning color palette: a pale to vibrant green body with a series of reddish-orange spots and lines, particularly concentrated around the head and fins.

Growing to only 2.5 inches (6 cm), it is a scale-less fish. To compensate for its lack of scales and its small size, it produces a thick, bitter-tasting, and toxic mucus that covers its body, making it unpalatable to most predators.

Natural Habitat & Origin

This goby is widely distributed across the Indo-West Pacific, from the Red Sea to Fiji. It is a strictly coral-associated species, living exclusively among the branches of Acropora corals. They are usually found in shallow, high-energy areas of the reef, such as the reef flat or reef crest, where the water is clear and well-oxygenated.

Care Requirements

The Green Coral Goby is relatively easy to care for, provided its specialized habitat needs are met. It thrives in standard marine parameters: a pH of 8.1 to 8.4 and a temperature of 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C).

A minimum tank size of 10-15 gallons (50L) is sufficient for a single specimen or a pair. The most important setup requirement is the presence of branching corals, preferably live Acropora or other SPS (Small Polyp Stony) corals. If live corals are not an option, high-quality resin replicas can serve as a substitute for cover, though the fish will not display its full range of natural behaviors.

Diet & Feeding

In the wild, they are opportunistic feeders that consume small crustaceans and larvae that drift into the coral branches. They may also nibble on the coral polyps or the mucus the coral produces.

In the aquarium, they should be fed small, frequent meals of high-quality marine foods. They will accept finely chopped mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and high-quality marine flakes or pellets. Special care should be taken to ensure they are getting enough to eat, as they are not aggressive feeders and may be outcompeted by larger, faster-swimming fish.

Behavior & Temperament

Green Coral Gobies are remarkably peaceful and spend the vast majority of their time perched motionless on coral branches. They are not schooling fish and are usually found singly or in male-female pairs.

They can be territorial toward other members of the Gobiodon genus if the tank is small or if there are not enough coral hosts. While they are reef-safe, they can sometimes cause minor irritation to their host coral by sitting on it or nibbling polyps, but a healthy, established coral colony will easily tolerate this.

Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include other small, peaceful reef inhabitants:

  • Clownfish
  • Blennies
  • Firefish
  • Small Cardinalfish
  • Reef-safe invertebrates like Cleaner Shrimp

Avoid housing them with large, predatory fish or with very aggressive species that might bother them in their coral home.

Breeding

They are known to spawn in the home aquarium. They are "bi-directional hermaphrodites," meaning they can change sex from male to female or female to male to facilitate pairing. The female will lay a small cluster of eggs on a branch within the host coral, which the male then fertilizes and guards. Raising the fry is extremely difficult due to their microscopic size and the need for specialized live foods like rotifers.

Common Health Issues

They are generally hardy but can be susceptible to common marine parasites like Ich or Velvet if they are stressed. Because they are scale-less, they can be more sensitive to certain medications (particularly those containing copper) than other fish. Maintaining stable water parameters and providing a stress-free environment with plenty of coral cover is the best way to ensure their health.
