Gold Streak Blenny

The Gold Streak Blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura), more commony known in the hobby as the Tailspot Blenny, is a charming and inquisitive small fish that is a favorite for nano-reef aquariums. This species is easily identified by the prominent black spot at the base of its tail (caudal peduncle) and the beautiful blue and orange lines that run just below its eyes. Its body typically displays a warm tan or muted orange hue, blending perfectly into the reef environment.

Reaching a maximum size of only about 2.5 inches (6 cm), it is one of the best choices for small saltwater setups. They are famous for their "perching" behavior, often sitting on a rock or coral and watching the surrounding activity with large, expressive eyes.

Natural Habitat & Origin

The Gold Streak Blenny is native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly common in the waters of the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. It inhabits coral-rich areas, often found peering out of small holes in the rockwork or perched on coral branches in shallow coastal reefs. These areas provide both protection from predators and a constant supply of the film algae they consume.

Care Requirements

The Gold Streak Blenny is relatively hardy, making it suitable for intermediate aquarists. Recommended water parameters include a pH range of 8.1 to 8.4, a temperature between 75°F to 82°F (24°C to 28°C), and a salinity of 1.020 to 1.025.

A minimum tank size of 10-15 gallons (approx. 50L) is sufficient, provided there is enough live rock. The tank setup should feature plenty of crevices and small holes where the blenny can retreat. They are generally reef-safe and will not bother corals or most invertebrates, though they may graze on some types of filamentous algae.

Diet & Feeding

This blenny is primarily a herbivore. In the wild, it spends most of its day scraping microalgae and detritus from rock surfaces. In captivity, its diet should be supplemented with high-quality herbivore preparations, including spirulina-enriched flakes, pellets, and dried seaweed (Nori).

While they will help control some nuisance algae in the tank, they should not be expected to survive on naturally occurring algae alone. Providing a varied diet ensures they maintain their health and the subtle but beautiful orange highlights around their eyes.

Behavior & Temperament

The Gold Streak Blenny exhibits a generally peaceful demeanor, making it an excellent choice for a peaceful community reef. It is quite social with other fish but can be territorial toward other blennies of the same genus or fish with a similar body shape.

They are known for their lively and comical personalities. They spend much of their time shifting from one perching spot to another, giving the impression that they are "patrolling" their territory.

Tank Mates

Ideal companions include other peaceful reef inhabitants such as:

  • Ocellaris Clownfish
  • Firefish Gobies
  • Royal Grammas
  • Small Cardinalfish
  • Reef-safe invertebrates (Hermit Crabs, Snails, Cleaner Shrimp)

Avoid housing them with large, aggressive fish or with other combtooth blennies in smaller aquariums.

Breeding

Breeding the Gold Streak Blenny in a home aquarium is uncommon but possible. They are substrate spawners, laying eggs in small crevices or empty shells which the male will then guard until they hatch. Raising the microscopic larvae is the primary challenge, as they require specialized live cultures like rotifers.

Common Health Issues

Like most marine fish, they can be susceptible to Marine Ich and Velvet if stressed by poor water quality or aggressive tank mates. Maintaining a stable environment and providing a high-quality diet are the best ways to ensure a long and healthy life for this inquisitive little fish.
