Spotted Coral Croucher
The Spotted Coral Croucher (Caracanthus maculatus) is a tiny, cryptic reef fish that lives within branching coral — peaceful, reef-safe and ideal for nano tanks with the right coral.

Spotted Coral Croucher
The Spotted Coral Croucher (Caracanthus maculatus) is a tiny, secretive reef fish unlike almost anything else in the hobby — a rounded, laterally compressed little body, velvety in texture and spotted in pink and grey, that lives wedged among the branches of stony corals. Rarely venturing far from its coral home, it is a peaceful, fascinating nano-reef resident for keepers who appreciate the unusual.
Its dependence on branching coral for shelter is central to keeping it happy.
Natural Habitat & Origin
Caracanthus maculatus is found across the Indo-Pacific, where it lives obligately among the branches of corals such as Pocillopora and Stylophora, sheltering deep within the coral and darting between branches. Its cryptic colouring and habit of crouching motionless help it avoid predators.
In the aquarium it strongly benefits from a healthy branching coral (or a structure that mimics one) to live among, plus a calm, established environment.
Care Requirements
Maintain stable marine conditions: salinity around 1.024–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, and a temperature of about 24–26°C (75–79°F). Reaching only about 5 cm (2 inches), it suits nano tanks of around 38 litres (10 US gallons) or more, ideally with branching coral for it to shelter in. It is reasonably hardy in a mature, peaceful tank, though it can be cryptic and easily overlooked. Note that it has mildly venomous spines, so handle with a little care.
Diet & Feeding
The Spotted Coral Croucher is a micro-carnivore, feeding on small crustaceans and zooplankton that pass near its coral home. In the aquarium offer small meaty foods — frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and finely chopped seafood — fed in small amounts where the croucher can reach them. A tank with natural microfauna helps support it between feedings, and patience is needed as it feeds shyly from cover.
Behavior & Temperament
This is a peaceful, retiring fish that spends almost all its time among coral branches, emerging only briefly. It poses no threat to tankmates and can be kept singly or as a pair in a suitable coral head. Its quiet, cryptic nature means it is best in a calm tank where it won't be outcompeted or harassed.
Tank Mates
Keep it with small, peaceful reef fish — gobies, small wrasses, firefish, cardinalfish and similar — and avoid aggressive or fast species that will out-compete it for food. It is fully reef-safe; indeed, it depends on healthy corals for shelter, so it suits a peaceful nano or community reef well.
Breeding
Caracanthus maculatus is a pelagic spawner and is not commonly bred in the home aquarium; trade specimens are wild-collected. Pairs may form within a coral head in a suitable tank.
Common Health Issues
The Spotted Coral Croucher is reasonably hardy in the right setting but can decline if it lacks suitable coral shelter, is outcompeted for food, or is kept in an unstable tank. Like all marine fish it can be affected by marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) and marine velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum). Provide branching coral, a calm community and regular small feedings, quarantine new arrivals, and this curious little fish can be a rewarding and unusual addition to a peaceful reef.
