Sunface Damselfish
The Sunface Damselfish (Chrysiptera talboti), or Talbot's damsel, is a small, delicately coloured reef fish — hardy, reef-safe and one of the most peaceful damsels.

Sunface Damselfish
The Sunface Damselfish (Chrysiptera talboti), commonly called Talbot's damsel, is one of the prettiest and best-behaved damselfish in the hobby. Its body shades from a soft lavender-pink to pale yellow over the head, with a distinctive black spot on the dorsal fin. Crucially, it is far more peaceful than the notoriously aggressive damsels, which — combined with its hardiness and delicate colouring — makes it an excellent, genuinely community-safe damsel for newcomers.
Its gentle nature even allows a small group to be kept together, an unusual luxury among damselfish.
Natural Habitat & Origin
Chrysiptera talboti is found in the western Pacific, where it lives near coral and rubble on reef slopes, hovering close to the bottom in loose groups and feeding on zooplankton. It stays near the protection of the reef.
In the aquarium it appreciates plenty of live rock with crevices to shelter in, and open water just above the rock in which to feed.
Care Requirements
Maintain stable marine conditions: salinity around 1.024–1.026, pH 8.1–8.4, and a temperature of about 24–26°C (75–79°F). Reaching only about 6 cm (2.5 inches), it can be kept in tanks of around 75 litres (20 US gallons) or more with ample rockwork; a small group suits a larger system. It is hardy and forgiving, an excellent beginner fish.
Diet & Feeding
The Sunface Damselfish is an omnivore, feeding mainly on zooplankton along with some algae in the wild. It readily accepts aquarium foods: offer frozen mysis and brine shrimp, quality marine flakes and small pellets, and foods with marine algae content. Feed small amounts a couple of times a day; it is an undemanding, eager feeder.
Behavior & Temperament
Unusually for a damsel, this is a genuinely peaceful, mild-mannered fish. It poses little threat to tankmates and, because of its tolerant nature, a small group can often be kept together — something rarely advisable with other damsels. It hovers near the rockwork, feeding in the open water above.
Tank Mates
Good companions are other peaceful reef fish — clownfish, gobies, smaller wrasses, anthias, cardinalfish and similar. Its gentle temperament means it can even be kept with relatively timid fish. It is fully reef-safe, leaving corals and ornamental invertebrates alone, making it an ideal, easygoing addition to a community reef.
Breeding
Like other damselfish, Chrysiptera talboti lays demersal eggs on a cleaned surface, guarded by the male, but rearing the pelagic larvae is rarely accomplished in the home aquarium. Trade specimens are wild-collected.
Common Health Issues
The Sunface Damselfish is hardy but, like all marine fish, can be affected by marine ich (Cryptocaryon irritans) and marine velvet (Amyloodinium ocellatum) under stress. Quarantine new arrivals and keep water quality stable. One of the most peaceful and beautiful damsels, it is a colourful, resilient and community-safe fish — an excellent choice for a first marine aquarium.
