The Head-and-Tail-Light Tetra (Hemigrammus ocellifer), also known as the Beacon Fish, is a timeless favorite in the aquarium hobby. Its common name is derived from the two luminous, copper-colored spots that appear to glow when caught by the light—one located just behind the eye and the other at the base of the tail. These "lights" provide a stunning visual contrast to its translucent, silvery-green body.

In a well-balanced aquarium, their activity and peaceful nature make them a perfect choice for community setups. They are particularly effective in "blackwater" or heavily planted tanks where their reflective spots can truly shine against a darker background.

Natural Habitat & Origin

Hemigrammus ocellifer is native to South America, spanning across the Amazon River basin in Brazil and Peru, as well as the coastal rivers of Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. They are typically found in slow-moving tributaries, forest streams, and flooded forests. These environments are often rich in submerged wood and leaf litter, providing soft, slightly acidic water that is often stained with tannins.

Care Requirements

The Head-and-Tail-Light Tetra is exceptionally hardy and adaptable, making it one of the best choices for a beginner aquarist. A minimum tank size of 15-20 gallons (60-75L) is recommended to allow for a proper school and adequate swimming space.

They can tolerate a wide range of water conditions but thrive in a pH of 6.0 to 7.5 and a temperature of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C). They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with some open space for schooling. The use of a dark substrate and floating plants will help them feel secure and will make their reflective spots more prominent.

Diet & Feeding

In the wild, these tetras are micro-predators, feeding on a variety of small insects, larvae, and crustaceans.

In captivity, they are unfussy eaters and will accept:

  • High-quality micro-pellets or flakes
  • Frozen or live foods such as Daphnia, Cyclops, and Brine Shrimp
  • Freeze-dried bloodworms or tubifex

A varied diet is important to maintain their health and the brilliance of their "lights."

Behavior & Temperament

They are extremely peaceful and highly social. To see their best behavior and reduce stress, they should be kept in a school of at least 6-10 individuals. In a larger group, they are less shy and will spend more time in the open areas of the tank. They are active swimmers that occupy the middle and upper levels of the aquarium and will not bother other inhabitants.

Tank Mates

Because of their gentle nature, they are ideal for a community tank. Suitable companions include:

  • Other small Tetras and Rasboras
  • Corydoras and small Loaches
  • Dwarf Cichlids like Apistogramma
  • Peaceful Gouramis
  • Freshwater shrimp and snails

Avoid keeping them with very large or aggressive tank mates that might see them as food or harass them.

Breeding

Head-and-Tail-Light Tetras are egg scatterers. Breeding them is relatively straightforward: provide a separate spawning tank with soft, slightly acidic water, dim lighting, and plenty of fine-leaved plants (like Java Moss) or a spawning mop. Parents should be removed after spawning as they are prone to eating their own eggs. The fry will hatch in 24-36 hours and can be fed infusoria and later baby brine shrimp.

Common Health Issues

They are a very robust species. However, like all tetras, they can be sensitive to sudden changes in water chemistry and are susceptible to Ich and Fin Rot if water quality is poor. Regular water changes and maintaining a stable environment are the best ways to keep them healthy.
