Guppy disease (Tetrahymena), Camallanus worms, columnaris and fin rot — how to tell them apart, and why modern fancy guppies die in their first month.

Guppy diseases and health problems

Guppies have a reputation for being indestructible, and wild-type guppies more or less are. Modern fancy guppies are a different animal — and a lot of new keepers meet that difference in their first month, when half a bag of brilliant fish from the shop dies for no visible reason.

That is not usually your fault, and understanding why changes what you do about it.

Why new guppy stock is fragile

Commercial fancy guppies are produced at enormous scale on farms in Southeast Asia, in ponds run at high density with routine prophylactic antibiotics. Two things follow.

First, the fish arrive carrying bacterial populations that have seen a lot of antibiotics, which is precisely how resistance is selected for. A bacterial infection in newly imported guppy stock frequently does not respond to the first medication you try.

Second, decades of intensive line-breeding for fin and colour traits have narrowed the gene pool and, along the way, selected against robustness. The fish are beautiful and they are not hardy, and the industry's answer has been medication rather than breeding for vigour.

The practical consequences:

  • Quarantine new guppies for two to four weeks in a separate tank, without exception. See the quarantine protocol.
  • Expect some losses in the first month regardless of what you do. It is not a reflection on your husbandry.
  • Buy locally bred fish where you can. Guppies from a local breeder or club are usually dramatically hardier than imported shop stock, and cost less.
  • Do not add new fish to an established guppy tank without quarantine. The standard way a settled colony collapses is a bag of new fish from the shop.

Guppy disease (Tetrahymena)

The one named after them, and the most serious.

Tetrahymena corlissi is a free-living ciliate protozoan that normally feeds on bacteria in organic debris and turns opportunistically parasitic on weakened fish. Guppies are disproportionately affected, hence the common name.

What it looks like: a diffuse whitish or greyish haze under the skin, often described as the fish looking "fuzzy" or "dusty" beneath the scales rather than on top of them. Fish flash and scratch, breathe heavily, become emaciated rapidly despite eating, and often develop a slightly ragged, deteriorating look to the fins and body edges. Progression is fast.

How it differs from ich: ich produces discrete raised white spots that look like grains of salt stuck to the fish, and they are clearly individual and countable. Tetrahymena is diffuse and under the surface — a cloudiness rather than spots. Ich responds well to heat and standard treatment; Tetrahymena largely does not.

Treatment: honestly, poor. Once it is systemic, it is usually fatal, and there is no reliable cure available to hobbyists. What helps:

  • Remove affected fish immediately — it spreads through the tank via organic debris.
  • Aggressive cleaning: substrate vacuuming, filter maintenance, large water changes. The organism thrives on organic load.
  • Raise hardness to the proper range if it is low, since the underlying vulnerability is usually stress.
  • Salt and antiparasitics may slow it in early cases. Do not expect much.

Prevention is the real answer: low organic load, correct hardness, no overcrowding, and quarantine.

Camallanus worms

Underdiagnosed, and specifically common in livebearers.

Camallanus is a nematode that lives in the intestine. The giveaway is unmistakable once you know it: short red or reddish-brown threads protruding from the vent, most visible in the morning. They look like tiny red hairs and retract when the fish is disturbed.

By the time worms are visible externally, the infection is well established and usually tank-wide — the life cycle runs through the water and other fish are infected even if asymptomatic. Earlier signs are wasting despite normal feeding, a hollow belly, and white stringy faeces.

Treatment: levamisole or fenbendazole, dosed to the whole tank, repeated after two to three weeks to catch newly hatched larvae. Vacuum the substrate thoroughly between doses — expelled worms and larvae reinfect. One round is never enough. General background in parasitic infections and wasting.

Columnaris

A bacterial infection (Flavobacterium columnare) that moves fast in warm water and is frequently mistaken for a fungus.

What it looks like: greyish-white patches, classically a "saddleback" band across the back near the dorsal, or a fuzzy white erosion around the mouth (hence the old name "mouth fungus"). Edges look ragged rather than cottony. Fish may develop pale gills and breathe hard if it takes hold there.

How it differs from a true fungus: fungal growth is distinctly cottony and three-dimensional, usually on damaged tissue, and grows more slowly. Columnaris is flatter, greyer, spreads visibly within a day or two, and can kill inside 48 hours in a warm tank. See white fuzzy patches for the comparison.

Treatment: antibacterial medication, and lower the temperature — columnaris accelerates sharply above 26°C, which is one more argument for keeping guppies at 22–24°C. More in bacterial infections.

Fin rot

Common in long-finned strains and almost always secondary to something else.

Fins fray and recede from the edges, sometimes with a white or reddened margin. The bacteria involved are ubiquitous — the reason they win is a fish whose immune response is compromised by poor water quality, wrong hardness, nipping damage, or cold.

Treat the cause first: test ammonia and nitrite, check GH and KH, and identify whether something in the tank is nipping. Then treat the infection. Fin rot that keeps coming back after successful treatment is telling you the underlying condition was never fixed. Full guide: fin rot.

Prevention, in order of impact

  1. Get the water right. Hard, alkaline, stable. More guppy deaths trace back to soft water than to any pathogen.
  2. Quarantine everything new, for two to four weeks, in a separate tank.
  3. Run cooler. 22–24°C. Most bacterial problems accelerate above 26°C, and guppies live considerably longer at the lower end.
  4. Do not overcrowd. Easier said than done when the fish breed constantly — see tank size and stocking.
  5. Keep organic load down. Vacuum the substrate, do not overfeed, maintain the filter. Both Tetrahymena and columnaris are diseases of dirty water.
  6. Buy better fish. Local breeders over imported stock, every time.
